About this event

Join us for an insightful lunchtime discussion on post-fire recovery efforts and urban forest resilience in Los Angeles County. Our featured speakers, Dr. Francisco Escobedo, Dr. Carl Norlen and Dr. Christopher Shogren, will share updates from their ongoing research at the Los Angeles Urban Research Station. Their talk will explore:

  • Post-fire impacts on urban tree canopy
  • Early findings from forest-level recovery studies
  • Preliminary observations on individual tree and species responses to fire
  • Opportunities for adaptive management and community resilience

This session will offer valuable insight for urban foresters, arborists, planners, and municipal staff working in fire-prone regions.

About the Speakers:

Dr. Francisco Escobedo
is a Research Urban Forester with the USDA Forest Service, Pacific Southwest Research Station. His work focuses on urban forest management, green infrastructure, and how environmental and socioeconomic factors influence tree canopy dynamics in cities. With a PhD from the University of Florida and over two decades of experience, Dr. Escobedo’s research has helped shape urban forestry practices across the Americas.

Dr. Christopher Shogren
is a Tree and Landscape Specialist with the University of California Cooperative Extension. His research focuses on tree physiology, species performance under stress, and post-disturbance recovery in urban environments. With a PhD from the University of California, Davis, Dr. Shogren works closely with communities and agencies to develop practical, science-based solutions for resilient landscapes in a changing climate.

Dr. Carl Norlen is a physical scientist at the US Geological Survey whose work explores how climate change affects ecosystems and society.  With a PhD in Biological Sciences from UC Irvine and a background in education and college access, Dr. Norlen is committed to making science actionable through inclusive, community-driven partnerships.
